Dutch Media Hub proves its added value during IBC 2011
The recent edition of IBC shows that the Dutch Media Hub project has yielded results. During the five-day show it was announced that the US company IndieFlix will distribute its video-on-demand content in Europe through the Dutch Media Hub partners. IndieFlix has the rights to over 3000 feature films, documentaries and short films.
In addition to this agreement, IBC was also a great success for the partners of the project. Partners TV Everywhere, iphion and amsterdam inbusiness were present at the stand with their own counters. Gijs Davelaar from iphion: “We have engaged with a huge number of international television stations. Being part of a stand with a wonderful profile while also having our own counter has really worked for us.”
On all five days of the fair, Enterprise Europe Network organised a matchmaking event, which proved very popular. Before the event, visitors could create a profile in which they could indicate what kind of companies they would like to talk to. The bar at the Dutch Media Hub stand was constantly filled with participants in this event.
Because the Dutch Media Hub stand is a partnership with the Municipality of Amsterdam, George Freriks, the project director of DMH, welcomed the mayor, Mr Eberhard van der Laan, to the stand on Friday and showed him around.
Monday 12 September, a recent study of the Canadian market carried out by Dutch Media Hub was presented. Mr Jan van Run, a member of the Provincial Executive, and Mr William Pound from the Canadian embassy received copies of the study at the DMH theatre. The survey gives an overview of the digital media and content (production) industry in Canada, with a focus on film and television production.

Workshop on Rights
More and more frequently Dutch Media Hub is approached, mostly by “independents” for help with marketing rights in Europe. This provides our companies with opportunities, not only to offer facilities, but also to generate new turnover through revenue sharing models. This is why Dutch Media Hub is organising a unique workshop on rights management for our partners. This workshop is given by Wendy Bernfeld and offers insight into the world of rights. What are the issues, what are the fees, how do the new platforms work, and what are the opportunities for DMH companies? The workshop will be held Monday 19 September from 13.30 till 17.00. Afterwards there will be drinks. The workshop will be held in Hilversum, the exact venue will be announced later. This workshop is free for DMH members. From every partner, at most two people may take part. Please apply by email to: meetings@dutchmediahub.com.
IBC This year Dutch Media Hub will have a large booth at IBC. We will be in Hall 9, booth 9.A20. The booth will feature a small theatre, with an interesting programme every day. Enterprise Europe Network will organise a matchmaking event. So far 140 international companies have created a profile. Since we expect all these parties to make a number of appointments, we can already consider it a success. amsterdam inbusiness, a partner in our booth, concentrates on parties interested in the business climate in the Netherlands, especially the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. All partners of Dutch Media Hub can be represented at the booth with information materials, demos and live presentations. A number of partners will have their own counters at the booth. On Monday we will receive the participants of iMMovator at the exhibition and we also expect a Canadian delegation from the industry for the presentation of the report on Market research in Canada, which was conducted recently. A bar, with happy hour from 17.00 to 18.00, fresh stroopwafels (Dutch delicacy) and good coffee make the Dutch Media Hub ambiance complete.
You can register for the programme through the website: www.dutchmediahub.com.
Please note that the deadline for registration for the exhibition is extended to 19th of August! Free registration via www.ibc.org

New York trade mission and 2g@there have been cancelled
The New York trade mission has been postponed due to a busy autumn schedule resulting in a minimum of interest.
The 2g@there subsidies programme will also be discontinued. The main reason for this is the complexity of the programme.
The PPRM – President’s Programme Russia This programme gives Dutch companies the opportunity to identify (for free) the opportunities on the Russian market, to establish Russian contacts and to get acquainted with the Russian business culture via a well educated Russian manager.
In the programme there are several managers working in the media/marketing/advertising field who are looking for Dutch companies that are also working in this sector. Please, contact us to receive the resumes (CV’s) of the Russian Managers.

Cineco and iphion join
Cineco and iphion have joined the project. ‘For Cineco it is important to join the initiative of the DMH, because we can see the strength and synergy of the participating parties. We believe in the mission of the DMH to want to form the digital gateway for the whole of Europe. This is why we like to be part of this amazing initiative. Especially since the borders are open and we, as a Dutch company, see great potential in the European market. That can only succeed if a unified collaboration arises between parties that can reinforce each other,’ said Robert the Vries of Cineco.
iphion delivers digital television through the Internet. It uses the latest technology and existing infrastructure. iphion does not have its own network, but is available via existing networks. For more information: www.iphion.nl

PwC new partner Dutch Media Hub
Hilversum, 24 February 2011 – Dutch Media Hub proudly presents PwC as new ‘Service and Knowledge’ partner.
George Freriks, project director Dutch Media Hub: “We are very pleased to welcome PwC as our new partner. It is an important sign of trust when an internationally recognized company like PwC chooses to join Dutch Media Hub as a partner. We already have an impressive network and with the excellent international contacts, connections and expertise of PwC we are able to lift our network to an even higher level. We will continue to work together with our users to further develop and strengthen the position of the Netherlands as the Digital Gateway to Europe.”
Ennel van Eeden, Director at PwC: "We are delighted to be a partner of Dutch Media Hub. We are inspired by the ambitions of this network made up of people and organizations that are grasping the opportunities of the fast-changing digital landscape as a means to position the Netherlands as a digital gateway to Europe. As a result of these developments, business models are changing, new players are entering the market place and new partnerships are formed. PwC is now a part of the dynamics where we can bundle our expertise with those of the other members of the Dutch Media Hub to work through these challenges as the new business models evolve."
On-line film distribution to cinemas is ready for operational roll-out!
Hilversum, January 31, 2011- Dutch Media Hub and EYE FILM Instituut Nederland jointly initiated a pilot project to deliver film content online to the theatres. In this project, called “Pilot Digital Cinema” the following Dutch companies participated: BT, Felton, Gofilex, inVision Subtitling, KPN Broadcast Services and Technicolor.
In January 2011 the Digitalisering Nederlandse Cinema foundation was created by EYE Film Instituut Nederland, de Nederlandse Vereniging van Bioscoopexploitanten (NVB) and de Nederlandse Vereniging van Filmdistributeurs (NVF). This foundation will ensure that all Dutch cinemas and film theatres will rapidly digitize thanks to a unique financing model in which operators, distributors, The Netherlands Film Fund and the Dutch government will jointly bear the transition costs. It is expected that all Dutch cinemas will be digitized by the middle of 2012.
Since both initiatives are linked, DMH and EYE have decided to further fine-tune these initiatives in a pilot project. DMH and EYE Film Instituut Nederland are joint initiators of the project ‘Pilot Digital Cinema’.
Results and opportunities
The pilot resulted in a proven concept for a supply chain management system supporting the total supply chain from studios, production companies, distributors and theatres, in an open and transparent business model.
Parties in the industry are facilitated in connecting in a safe and secured way, where order management and track and trace of the files is synchronized.
In the Netherlands there is a unique process in place for the distribution of film content to the theatres. Both distributors and theatres work together in the distribution of 35mm films. In the pilot this process has been expanded with a file transfer for digital content.
Pilot workflow
In the pilot an online transfer of film content has been demonstrated. A Digital Copy Master has been ingested and transferred to a production company for further regionalisation. Afterwards the file was distributed to the relevant theatres. The total process of 35mm hard drives and file-transfers was integrated with the order management, infrastructural monitoring and workflow management. An additional advantage the pilot revealed was the possibility of balancing the load on the transfer system and the network by actively choosing between physical distribution or online distribution.
This system is now ready for full scale development and deployment in the Netherlands. When this system is operational in the Netherlands it has the potential of being expanded in three ways:
Distribution frequencies for films and trailers can be scheduled upon customer request,
European distribution. This model of supply chain management can be copied in other European countries,
This system can be copied upstream in the supply chain. It can facilitate traffic between studios and production companies. By doing so, it will create a borderless playing field for the production and distribution of film content, initially for bringing content from studios to the theatres (but later on this can also be expanded to CDNs).
George Freriks (project director Dutch Media Hub): “By running this pilot in the Dutch market we have already learned the first important lessons for a further roll-out in Europe. This is another step in our ambition of building a ‘Gateway to Europe’. In addition, the pilot has generated interest from the major studios in the United States who are also looking for efficient, safe and affordable digital delivery!”
According to Jeroen Wilmes, projectmanager on behalf of Dutch Media hub, “this project is a great and successful example where bringing together different companies from the industry can lead to innovative solutions in the digital world of content distribution. This project proves that, by sharing knowledge, experience and technology, we can serve the industry with a new and efficient way of distributing content to the theatres. This is only the beginning, this process can be expanded across Europe and not necessarily only to theatres, but it can also be used for other ways of content distribution.”

Participants meeting November Thursday 11 November, a delegation of Dutch Media Hub participants gathered at the Media Park in Hilversum. George Freriks (project director) and Rosalie Weijers (manager pilots) gave a presentation on the state of affairs of Dutch Media Hub. National and international interest is growing. So is the awareness of technological developments and opportunities. Actual leads are already generated. The current pilots are developing successfully.
TNO research At the same meeting Frits Klok (TNO) presented a study about the opportunities for Dutch Media Hub in the film, television and commercial production industries in the United States and India. The study showed that the independent studio’s in the US are interesting as they produce 72% of the films in de US and are responsible for over 50% of the television content that is broadcasted in Europe. The Indian market appears to be more of a challenge and currently less interesting because of the limited European interest in Indian content. On the other hand, an interesting opportunity in India is provided by the explosive accession of the number of television channels. As a result, the need for experience with television formats and production knowhow is growing.
Dialogic Stein Smeets (Dialogic) gave a presentation on possibilities to successfully file requests for subsidy. Some of his main tips: start preparing for your subsidy request on time. Try to combine a general request with a specific one and always remember that a specific request often needs (additional) company defrayment.

MIPTV 2010 (Cannes)
Every year in April, the MIPTV takes place in Cannes (France). This year, a delegation of the Dutch Media Hub visited the exhibition. Singapore serves as a Content Hub for South East Asia, China and India.
Since the Dutch Media Hub aims to be the main Content Hub for Europe, there were several reasons to get acquainted. After a good meeting, it was agreed that a delegation of the Dutch Media Hub will visit Singapore in June 2010 to discuss the possibilities of collaboration and to visit some media companies. At their turn, a delegation from the MDA will likely visit the Netherlands in September 2010 (probably during the IBC). Objective is to achieve a presentation in which the current practice and possible future methods are described, using the Dutch Media Hub. The advantages and possible disadvantages of the method of the American film studios are investigated and recorded.
Besides capturing the information into a presentation, Dutch Media Hub will organize a workshop for its partners and participants. Here one can hear and formost discuss the results of the study in order to strengthen the research. Freddy Otten and Rob ten Siethoff will perform this joint assignment. Dutch Media Hub at IBC 2009
This year’s IBC (International Broadcast Convention & Exhibition) in the RAI in Amsterdam hosted more than 1,300 exhibitors from over 130 countries and was attended by more than 45,000 visitors from all over the world. Impressive numbers, and the Dutch Media Hub was part of it for the first time.
Together with our partners we promoted the Dutch Media Hub and offered the visitors a chance to get acquainted with this initiative to become ‘the Digital Gateway to Europe’. An initiative like this cooperation was hard to comprehend for some visitors, as shown by remarks like “So, what product are you selling?” and “This hub, is that an underground cable network?”… So there was some explaining to do, but once they grasped it, they were enthusiastic about the Dutch way to innovate the way the industry works.
Over all we can look back at a very successful exhibition. We are planning on being there next year, even bigger and even better! A brief report about our exhibition at the IBC is available (in Dutch).
Dutch Media Hub international Matchmaking
On Friday September 11th we hosted an international Matchmaking event according to the speed networking principle. Several international companies signed up for the matchmaking, expressing their interest in specific Dutch Media Hub partners. Most requests could be met and in 20 minute sessions the registered companies had the chance to meet the partners of their choice. This way of networking took some getting used to for some people, but was proven effective and efficient at the end. We received several questions to host more of these events in the future.
